The horse breeding comes from Rafael José da Cunha´s days. The wooden lined stable, which is still used nowadays, has had some improvement work done in order to modernize the system which has automatics drinking troughs and other equipments. This stable, is one of the few agricultural installations which, is still used for the same purpose for which has been built.
The big growth which the stud farm has had, was because of Eng. Manuel Tavares Veiga, Manuel de Castro Veiga´s great grand-father, who was an agronomist and a expert in genetics. The stud farm has had a very big development under his management.
Manuel Tavares Veiga selected animals with the kind of morphology and strength he thought were the most suitable to develop the warrior skills, essential to a bullfight horse. He used the inbreeding method, in order to purify the species inside the same breed, and also to get the necessary homogeneity to establish its own characteristic. By this way, he settled the Veiga horses´ caracteristics: very beautiful, thin and dry heads, slightly convex, ancient and rare colors, thin and a little bit curved limbs, flexible horse backs, beautiful and malleable necks.
The Veiga stud farm, always has had the biggest concern over the stallions choosing. The studs, which were selected, were the ones with the best gait. They also should be able to guarantee the well-known studfarm´s characteristics.
An old olive oil warehouse, that still has its own stone reservoirs, is the keeper of all the awards and prizes won by the stud farm along all these years.
By the way, the Mare "Oferta" must be mentioned because she was the champion of the champions, in 1981, at the National Agricultural Fair, and also the studs "Quê-Ba", "Bailador", "Lidador II", "Universo", "Nilo", "Zimbro II", "Bailador II", "Dardo II", and "Danúbio".
All of them were awarded with brilliant prizes at specialized exhibitions and as a consequence of their first-rate recognition, they were selected to be Veiga studfarm´s reproductive stallions.
The strong Veiga horses´ inbreeding, gives them a big aptitude to mark their lineage and because of it, they can pass on the Veiga horses´characteristics, that's the reason why, they are often used to improve a large number of others stud farms.
That's the reason why their blood is very important nowadays, having a recognized role in Lusitanian horse's breeding in Portugal and abroad. A significant part of them is involved in the breeding process.
The export aspect is very important to the Veiga stud farm today, no other has such a strong influence and importance over the countries dedicated to the Lusitanian horses´ breeding.
